On your way to Meares Island, you’ll learn of the culture and traditions of local First Nations, view an assortment of delightful wildlife, glide over calm beds and paddle near kelp forests. Once you reach Meares Island, you’ll beach your canoe and be treated to an enlightening interpretive walk through a stunning ancient forest. You’ll even visit a stand of the largest cedar trees in Canada. Prepare yourself for a tour of Meares Island and a great deal more. This tour is offered primarily from May until September, but may be available earlier or later in the year depending on seasonal weather patterns. Trip times change every day to accommodate the changing tides. No canoe experience necessary! Canoe trips are a wonderful opportunity for families to experience paddling together, with a minimum age of 5 years old. The ocean going canoes you’ll voyage in are superbly stable. They have been counted on to travel 20 miles offshore for centuries.

Best yet, you’ll be lead by an experienced, knowledgeable first nations guide who’ll share their many traditional uses of plants with you. So come along, an engaging day is waiting for you. Cultural walks and nature hikes are offered primarily during the winter storm-watching season, which is from October to March. The Interpretive Winter Walk tour can be tailored to accommodate various fitness levels.

The quiet nature of a canoe allows for opportunities to meet a variety of beautiful wildlife; harbour seals, river otters, bald eagles, great blue herons and a number of intertidal sea creatures as just a hint of what may greet you. Unwind and enjoy as your well-versed first nations guide identifies local fauna and cultural teaching which relate to them, explains the importance of family totem poles and offers insight into the special Nuu-chah-nulth culture.
