The nearby Florida Everglades are home to more rare species of birds than any other place in the United States, and a trip through this vast swamp and marsh land by airboat will provide you with an appreciation of the importance of the Everglades to our own survival. Everglades National Park and the area bordering Everglades City is a wilderness adventure habitat where kayakers, hikers and campers can come close to nature. Alligators, American crocodiles, white-tailed deer and the rare Florida panther are all indigenous to this part of Florida, but don’t be surprised if you encounter a 15’ long python that is now a threat to all the native creatures. The number of these African snakes has tripled in the past five years and presents a serious problem for the Everglades’ survival. Dolphin encounters can be experienced at Grassy Key at the Dolphin Research Center, and the Miami Seaquarium is great place to visit for the orca whales, penguins, manatees and flamingoes. Jungle Island is a fun place to visit and after 40 years it remains as one of Miami’s most popular tourist venues. If you’ve never seen a liger, or a tabby tiger, then this is the place for you!
