This Maui community is the former capital of the Kingdom of Hawaii. These days, it’s a popular tourist destination for visitors to Maui’s Kaanapali and Kapalua resort areas. Its name comes from the words “Lā hainā” or “cruel sun” in the Hawaiian language, since it is prone to hot, dry weather. Given that it’s a tourist hub, you’ll find lots of things to do in this area, such as scuba diving, sailing, whale watching, great nightlife and dining and much more. Be sure to visit the town’s famed Banyan tree, which occupies an entire block at the heart of downtown.
