Gold Mining Comes Alive Trek
by Great Horned Owl Eco-ToursWelcome to yesteryear. You’ll begin your step back in time with a visit to Hedley, a historic gold mining town. Then, jump on a shuttle and make your way to Mascot Mine, situated on a cliff overlooking the Similkameen Valley. Along the way, you’ll listen to stories about the amazing challenges gold mining pioneers faced. Once you arrive at Mascot Mine, you’ll come to appreciate the daily life of a mine worker- including the risks associated with it. Then try your hand at gold panning on the Similkameen River system and wander through the Snaza’ist Discovery Centre for greater insight into this fascinating profession. As your day comes to a close, refuel with lunch at the Hitching Post Restaurant! Bring your camera because there are plenty of vantage points to capture knock-out photography! This educational and exciting activity makes for a fantastic family outing. Children aged 10 and older welcomed. Access to the mine requires a short walk, followed by a series of steep staircases. If you need a rest, there are several places to stop and take in the view! This is a moderate level activity, and requires a minimum of 4 participants.

Incredible Bird Watching and Nature Excursion

One third of the South Okanagan is included in the Provincial Land Reserve/Protected Area. These lands are comprised of a montage of marshes, pastures, rivers and dry desert- providing one of Canada’s finest bird retreats. Due to the incredibly diverse territory, a wide range of birds may be sighted, including western bluebird, black chinned hummingbird and Clark’s nutcracker jay. Waterfowl such as limicolae, nightjars, raptors and passerines also call this magnificently varied land home. This is an ideal activity for nature enthusiasts and bird watchers of all experience levels. Plan your excursion for dawn or dusk in an effort to sight more obscure species. Over 300 species of birds can be seen in the Okanagan Valley throughout the year, including the rarely seen yellow-breasted chat, bobolink, long billed curlew or white-headed woodpecker. May to early August is the best time for seeing birds. During the peak season, one can easily identify 75 to 100 species in a day’s outing. The Provincial Land Reserve/Protected Area includes land that is broken into a patchwork of marshes, pastures, rivers and dry desert, making for an ultra-rich bird habitat. Throughout your exploration, your guide will address critical global issues such as “biodiversity”, “species at risk”, “water sustainability”, “natural history” and “endangered ecosystems” using first hand exploration. This ecosystem exploration will leave you with a greater understanding of the complex and fragile world that surrounds you. You will visit the Antelope Bush Ecosystem (Desert), Grassland Ecosystem, and Forest Ecosystem. The Forest Ecosystem is positioned the high alpine and provides unequaled views of lovely Okanagan Valley. Hike Magnificent Mount Kobau

Then, head off for one sensational photographic opportunity: “Spotted Lake.” Recognized as one of Canada’s most extraordinary natural attractions, the lake divides into spectrums of white, green and yellow pools during summer- thanks to super high concentrations of minerals. The Spotted Lake is 38 acres in size! What a wonder! The trail you will hike is comprised of well-defined loose gravel, and makes for easy travel. You’ll likely see some of Canada’s wildlife too, including Swallowtail butterflies, Brewer’s sparrow, mule deer, Turkey Vultures, marmot and black bears.
