by Vavoom Volcano ToursThis tour is the most physically demanding of any tour on the menu. An all day affair begins in the charming bay side town of Hilo with the destination being the only green sand beach on the planet. Known as Papakolea to islanders, the area is rich in culture and historical significance. The green sand is the result of erosion of the headland containing green semi-precious olivine. The drive will begin on the windward side where there is an abundance of lush greenery and climb to an elevation of just under 4100 feet to upland native Hawaiian forests and then begin a descent down the eastern flank of the volcano toward Ka Lae also known as the southernmost point in the United States of America. The tour ends back at Hilo at sunset with an appreciation for the less traveled areas of Hawaii’s Big Island and the experience of enjoying a beach made of semi-precious gems. Highlights Visit Papakolea, the unique green sand beach. Five miles of remote hiking gets you off the beaten track and away from the hordes. The van begins by heading south through Kona coffee plantations following contours of Hualalai at about 1,200 feet above sea level.
