The beach is located in a dry, hot and remote location and only accessible by a five mile roundtrip hike after a long ride from Hilo. Yes the drive is long but it is very enjoyable and provides an excellent opportunity to experience the many micro climates that make up the Big Island. The drive will begin on the windward side where there is an abundance of lush greenery and climb to an elevation of just under 4100 feet to upland native Hawaiian forests and then begin a descent down the eastern flank of the volcano toward Ka Lae also known as the southernmost point in the United States of America. The tour ends back at Hilo at sunset with an appreciation for the less traveled areas of Hawaii’s Big Island and the experience of enjoying a beach made of semi-precious gems.
