Boating
Often referred to as ‘The Venice of America’, it is little wonder that boating activities are high on the list of things to do in Fort Lauderdale. A drive over the Intercostals Bridge on 17th Street will usually brings gasps of awe and wonderment from first time visitors. The array of mega yachts one sees from the bridge is simply overwhelming. They come in all sizes and configurations, and the economy of Fort Lauderdale is largely dependent upon them and the service industry they have spawned. But not all of the boats here are large. There are small fishing boats, day sailing vessels, pontoon canal cruising boats and dinner cruise boats. If it floats, you’ll find it here! And of course there is the deep water harbor of Port Everglades from where modern cruise ships set sail for exotic destinations on a daily basis. The ocean invites both fishermen and divers to sample its abundance of fish, and for sailors the gentle breeze beckons you to unfurl your sails and sail off into the sunset.

Paddleboarding
Paddle boarding Fort Lauderdale has rapidly become the unofficial capital of the Paddleboard world. SUP, as it’s known to those who are seasoned veterans of the sport, is short for Stand Up Paddle boarding, so if you want to be a part of this newest, coolest craze then become familiar with its name. Ideally paddle boarders seek calm warm water for the best conditions to pursue their chosen pastime, and here is where South Florida excels. There are literally miles and miles of inland canals and rivers where a paddle boarder can travel in solitude or with a group of friends, and of course the beach and ocean are always close by to offer an alternate set of paddle boarding conditions. There are no age limits, no gender limitations, no polluting motors, no noise and no obnoxious fumes; sounds like a win, win, win situation! A fifteen minute acclimatizing session is about all most people need before they set off on their own, and there are several clubs and board rental facilities available where they will be happy to accommodate you.

Fishing
Fishing in Fort Lauderdale is a way of life for many people. On any given day throughout the year you’ll find people fishing, and unlike most places in the world where fishing is routinely predictable, the fishing in the warm water of the Atlantic Ocean is anything but. With a rod and line, a hook and some bait, you’re just as likely to catch a blue runner as you are to catch a sailfish. The reason is quite simple. The Gulfstream carries an enormous quantity of nutrients along its path northwards from the Caribbean to Europe, and nutrients feed little fish who in turn become the diet of larger fish. The Gulfstream is at its closest point to land as it passes South Florida bringing the fish within its water to within a couple of miles of the coast. Fishing boats of all sizes are within easy range of this abundance of fish, and while fishing in many places around the world is in a decline, the fishing in Florida has never been better. You’ll find that day or night sport fishing charter boats spend most of their time fishing and not travelling to the fishing grounds, but even the most experienced Captain is often surprised by the size and species of fish that has taken his bait. Just make sure you snap a picture, or your friends will never believe you.

Paddles and Boards is located quite literally in downtown Fort Lauderdale at George English Park, and this convenient location ensures that you can step out of your car or off the local bus and be on the water within minutes. For the uninitiated, Stand Up Paddleboarding differs from conventional long boarding, as the surfer remains standing and propels themselves through the water by paddling with a long canoe style paddle. It sounds easy, and it is! The overall effect compares to walking on water, a feat reserved for only a chosen few. There are more than 60 miles of inland canals and rivers in Broward County, and paddle boarding brings a new environmentally safe way of exploring them all. On any given day in Fort Lauderdale you will see paddle boarders cruising the canals, or even the streets as some have added wheels to their boards to make them into giant skate boards.

Fort Lauderdale is a vibrant sophisticated city that has shed its reputation as the 'spring break' place to be to become one of the most attractive and diverse destinations on Florida’s east coast. Its beautiful marinas and year-round perfect weather, has earned the city the title of the 'Boating Capital of the World.' Often referred to as the 'Venice of America,' Fort Lauderdale has more miles of canals than its Italian counterpart, and the water is clean, with a capital C. Away from its fancy marinas, and the vast array of expensive and not-so-expensive yachts, Fort Lauderdale's visitors and residents soak up the sun on its miles of beautiful, sandy beaches. Each of Fort Lauderdale's beaches has its own unique qualities to attract visitors. For example, at Hillsboro Beach visitors are often lucky enough to see turtles nesting, while just off shore in Lauderdale-by-the-sea wonderful opportunities for snorkeling are found near the coastal coral reefs. For those looking to do a little cultural exploring in the area, take a stroll around the Riverwalk Arts and Entertainment District, or stop for lunch at one of the bistros on Las Olas Boulevard. This part of Fort Lauderdale is home to some of the city's most popular cultural attractions that include the Museum of Discovery and Science, The Historical Centre, The Centre for the Performing Arts, and the Florida Grand Opera. For a unique experience, a visit to The Everglades Park is an absolute must. Tours are available, which allow you to see the Everglades from the safety and thrill of an airboat. Visitors will see endangered bird species, the last remaining Florida white-tail deer, and maybe if you’re really lucky, a rare Florida panther…..but don’t hold your breath!
